Request demoFrequently Asked Questions

When must a withholding receipt be issued in Ecuador?
The withholding obligation is generally triggered when a qualifying payment is made or credited to account, depending on the applicable tax rule. The corresponding receipt must be delivered within the deadline established by the SRI, which is generally no more than five days after the sales document is received. Companies should distinguish the tax event from the deadline for issuing or delivering its supporting document.

Who is required to issue electronic withholding receipts in Ecuador?
Electronic withholding receipts must be issued by taxpayers that have the status of withholding agents and are required to operate under the electronic document model. The obligation depends on the taxpayer’s classification, the tax involved and the nature of the transaction, so not every business in Ecuador issues withholding receipts.

Is the electronic withholding receipt part of Ecuador’s electronic invoicing framework?
Yes. The SRI electronic document model covers sales documents, withholding receipts and complementary documents. However, a withholding receipt is not an invoice: it records tax withheld from a transaction and follows its own XML structure, issuance logic and tax treatment.

What should companies review before implementing electronic withholding receipts in SAP?
Companies should review withholding-agent status, applicable tax rates, supplier classifications, invoice and payment triggers, tax bases, ERP configuration, XML generation, electronic signature management, SRI connectivity, authorization responses, cancellation rules and record retention. Validation and reconciliation controls should also be defined before the process is automated.

Does Ecuador require immediate transmission of electronic withholding receipts?
Yes. Since 1 January 2026, electronic withholding receipts must be transmitted immediately to the SRI. Companies therefore need reliable connectivity, timely document generation, error handling and status monitoring as part of the withholding process.

How does electronic withholding receipt compliance affect SAP or ERP processes?
The requirement affects tax determination, supplier accounting, invoice processing, payment execution, document generation and SRI integration. In SAP or ERP environments, the withholding result must remain consistent with the underlying transaction, while authorization, rejection and cancellation statuses need to be visible to finance and tax teams.

How can an electronic withholding receipt be cancelled in Ecuador?
Since 1 August 2025, eligible electronic withholding receipts must be cancelled through the SRI’s online process within the applicable deadline. In general, online cancellation is available until the 10th day of the month following issuance, subject to the conditions and exceptions established by the SRI.
Managing Ecuador Electronic Withholding Receipts in SAP
Electronic withholding receipts depend on accurate supplier, invoice, payment and tax determination data. In SAP or other ERP environments, companies need to identify the relevant withholding event, calculate the correct tax amount, generate the XML document, apply the electronic signature and manage the SRI authorization response without disrupting accounts payable or payment processing.
